Silo 2.x Resources
We're excited to announce that Silo 2024 is here! Silo 2024 now also includes Milo, a brand new standalone realtime renderer and the perfect companion to Silo. We hope you'll take a look and try out what the latest versions of these apps have to offer!
Since the release of Silo 2021, Silo 2.x is no longer officially supported (we will not be making updates to the program for new operating systems, etc). We do still want to provide you with the v2 downloads, help files, and extra content, so we've made all of that available on this page.
Silo v2.3.1 (Linux) (Red Hat Enterprise Linux / CentOS 6+, Fedora 16+, or Ubuntu 14.04+ (x86-64))
Silo 2.x Update History

Added PSD support. Load PSD files directly into Silo for textures, viewport reference images, etc.
Added live texture updating. Silo will now watch your texture files for changes and update automatically.
Misc small bug fixes and improvements.
Known Issues
3D Text: without tessellation, some characters may appear dark in editor, but this is simply an artifact of Silo's rendering of many-sided polygons and not a geometry issue.
Version 2.5.2
Added support for loading/saving of materials and textures in FBX.
Added a combined Diffuse and Ambient color picker to the Material Editor (to save time when setting both fields to the same color).
Fixed Save Selected Objects to only save selected objects in FBX.
Fixed Save Selected Objects to only save out relevant materials in all file formats.

Updated popover behavior based on user feedback.
Version 2.5.02
Fixed FBX bugs and improved FBX loading speed.
Fixed a rare issue leading to white/black screen on startup on some systems.
Retina support on MacOS.
Enabled standard Windows 10 scaling for high-DPI monitors. (This scales appropriately to system settings but may appear blurry.)

Improved many error messages for clarity.
Moved to 64-bit-only on Windows, greatly reducing crashes.
Added menu item to reveal preferences folder.
Object properties window now always shows shape properties (in addition to component properties).
Texture seam display is now per-object.
Texture seams can now be marked using highlighted edges.
Cleaned up internal code.
New app icon.
Lots of other bug fixes.
Version 2.3.1
Data directories have changed (for a better launch experience for users coming from Silo 2.2 and earlier). NOTE: This data directory change will require that users re-register Silo. Your same Silo 2.x registration information will work; please email support@nevercenter.com if you cannot find it, and we can look it up for you.
Windows versions are now large-address-aware, this is particularly helpful for 32-bit users when running on a 64-bit windows. Silo can now use 4 GB of RAM instead of just 2 GB.
Windows 64-bit native version. The 64-bit version can handle larger meshes due to availability of more than 4 GB of RAM, the same as the Mac OS X and Linux versions which are already 64-bit native starting in Silo 2.3.
The black-window issue on Linux has been fixed, which was caused by European numeric locales. Silo now forces a US/UTF-8 locale on launch. Some distros may still setup the locale incorrectly, so if you use a non-US locale and run into issues, please let us know at support@nevercenter.com what distribution / locale you are using.
A cut tool crash has been fixed.
Alt/option key handling on OS X has been fixed. This fix was made available early in version 2.3.02 for Mac OS X as well.
It is now possible to delete empty objects in the scene editor.
Exported OBJs should play much better with Substance Painter.
Context menu placement on OS X with multi-monitor setups should be fixed.
Mac-only: Qt libraries updated to v5.4 for compatibility with Yosemite Gatekeeper requirements.
Version 2.3.1 Known Issues
All Platforms:
FACT files exported to EIAS don't work properly. As a workaround, try another export format if you need to interchange with EIAS.
Exporting to OBJ will not include UVs for subdivided surfaces unless you refine the control mesh first. As a workaround, you can refine meshes, export, and undo the refinement.
OSX Only:
There is a rare OS X crash immediately on launch; please send bug reports to support@nevercenter.com if you encounter this.
Silo does not scale its icons correctly on OS X under Retina displays. If you experience this, a workaround is to navigate to Silo.app in the finder, choose "Get info", and check the box for "Open in low resolution".
Silo does not remember the texture assigned to the materials across sessions due to Apple sandboxing. To get textures to display, you must re-select the texture with the file selection dialog from the material dock during your Silo session.
Version 2.3.0
Moved to more modern Qt 5.x.
Linux support (RHEL/CentOS 6, recent Fedoras, recent Ubuntus have been tested; not all distros will work).
64-bit support for Mac OS X and Linux.
STL import.
Bug fixes.
Version 2.3.0 Known Issues
All Platforms:
FACT exchange between Electric Image Animation Software (EIAS) doesn't appear to work. We are looking into it, and are in contact with the EIAS folks.
OBJ export then loaded into Substance Painter causes Substance Painter to crash. There are reports that importing the Silo-made OBJs into another package first (like Roadkill) and then exporting again will produce OBJs that Substance Painter can read properly.
Empty meshes (deleting all polygons out of them) cannot be finally removed from the scene, even in the scene editor. A workaround is to select the empty object in the scene editor, create a polygon with the Polygon Tool, select it in object mode, and then delete it.
Meshes with non-standard topology, such as having three or more faces share the same edge, will cause subdivision to produce corrupted results. Boolean operations and other operations may also fail on such meshes. It is planned in the future to have a mesh cleaner operation that can help remove problematic pieces of geometry for situations like this.
Linux Only:
Some desktop environments, such as Gnome, bind the Alt key to move windows by default. You must go into the window or keyboard preferences of your desktop environment to use a different key (such as "super") instead, so that Silo's default use of Alt for camera movement will work.
Windows Only:
Old data from Silo 2.2 and before may reside in the "Silo Data" folder inside "My Documents". This old data may cause issues as the newer Silo will try to use it as-is. If you run into missing icons, key bindings, or other issues, please rename Silo Data to something else. Silo will recreate the folder with the new default Silo 2.3 data, and you will be able to set up your preferences after that from within Silo.
Additional Linux Notes (Linux available on Silo 2.3.x only)
The linux version of Silo is for x86-64 systems based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (and CentOS) version 6 or better. Many linux distributions will run it fine, but not all linux flavors are guaranteed to work. Generally, if the X windows system and glibc versions are the same or newer, Silo will likely work on that system.
We have tested RHEL/CentOS, recent Ubuntus (such as 14.04 and onward), recent Fedoras (16 and onward should work). Lubuntu and Gentoo thus far, possibly depending on the window manager, may have issues with black contents in the windows.
If you have a recent Linux distribution that is well known and doesn't work, please let us know by telling us your Linux distribution and release, key system specs (CPU, RAM). We cannot guarantee support for all systems.
